The House of Hades is Rick Riordan’s fourth installment of his series Heroes of Olympus. Have you ever felt like nobody noticed you, nobody cared, that you were too… aggressive? In this novel you have Nico, Leo, and Frank who learn there’s a difference between life and death, love and hate, want and need. This novel has plenty of humor, suspense, and love alike.
The humorous part of this novel can be shown in this simple quote, “Leo yelled from the helm, “Stupid rock gods! That’s the third time I’ve had to replace that mast! You think they grow on trees?” Nico frowned, “Masts are from trees.” “That’s not the point.”” This was a conversation between Nico and Leo, two of the main characters. Nico can be quite humorous at times but others he can put up the biggest walls between himself and anyone else in the world. One of the main lines that is unforgettable is, “With great responsibility comes the great need to take a nap.” Nico said this recently after meeting Percy and the others when they went on a mission. So all in all Nico and all the characters can be comical, some more than others.
The suspense part of the novel was shown by this quote, “Jason’s fingers itched to draw his sword. He’d met plenty of scary demigods, but he was starting to realize that Nico di Angelo –as pale and gaunt as he looked –might be more than he could handle.” This shows how much we don’t know about the characters and leaves us wondering what the future could hold with them. Most of the characters excluding Percy, Frank, and Piper, have little known of their pasts. So, basically you may find yourself at a cliff-hanger that ends somewhat like Jack telling Rose not to let go, her promising not to, and then letting go.
Love is a huge aspect of this novel which shows how Nico had his deepest, darkest secret and Cupid, the God of Love, made him admit it. This quote shows how love is interwoven into the novel, “Oh, I wouldn’t say that Love always makes you…
